An experienced executive and serial builder of technology-driven businesses, Darren Thompson has spent his career doing something that sounds straightforward yet turns out to be much more challenging: deploying the tools of the capital markets in genuine service of the larger missions of expanding financial access and promoting environmental sustainability. He has largely succeeded in building companies that create real value for society while generating strong returns for investors. Importantly, he has resisted the temptation to treat those goals as mutually exclusive. 

Over a 40-year career, Darren has held some of the most demanding seats at the table – from Goldman Sachs Managing Director to CFO of several of the most innovative emerging businesses of the current generation. What distinguishes his journey is not simply the scale of what he has built, but where he has chosen to build it: at the frontiers of technology and sustainability, where the hardest problems tend to reside. 

Most recently, as CFO of Bowery Farming, Darren helped conceive and scale one of the most ambitious agricultural technology companies, growing from 25 employees to more than 500, deploying almost a billion dollars in capital and most relevant to his work at Wharton, developing Unit Economics and environmental impact frameworks that became benchmarks for the sector. Backed by Fidelity, Google Ventures, KKR, First Round and Temasek, Bowery was built on a clear thesis: that technology-driven agriculture could feed cities more sustainably, reliably, and equitably than traditional supply chains. It turned out to be tremendously challenging, and rich with lessons he looks forward to sharing during his residency. 

Before Bowery, Darren led the turnaround of Spruce Finance, a residential solar platform backed by Kleiner Perkins and Google Ventures. Earlier, as CFO of Revolution Money, he helped build one of the first independent fintech companies around a mission that was genuinely ahead of its time: through a proprietary end-to-end tech platform delivering accessible, affordable financial services to Americans historically left behind by traditional players. The company’s sale to American Express helped establish fintech as a credible asset class, which at the time was not obvious to everyone. 

The formative portion of his career was spent on Wall Street, rising to the rank of  managing director at Goldman Sachs, where he raised capital for more than 200 emerging companies across industries. This beginning gave Darren a foundational conviction that has guided him: that the way capital is structured, priced, and deployed is not a neutral act. It shapes what gets built, who benefits, and what kind of future we create. 

That conviction has been a throughline across his career. Whether developing environmental KPI frameworks at Bowery or helping low- and moderate-income families access housing as the Head of Credit Finance for Fannie Mae, where his responsibilities included not only managing the risk of the world’s largest guarantee portfolio but ensuring the company fulfilled its core mission of fairly and equitably serving the broadest possible range of communities and borrowers. In his view, financial leadership carries a profound social responsibility. 

That commitment extends well beyond corporate responsibilities. Darren serves on the Executive Committee of the Board for Physicians for Human Rights, an international NGO that uses medical practitioners to document mass atrocities and advocate for human rights in far-reaching places such as Syria, Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur, the DRC and Kenya. He also currently serves on the board of Lafayette Square Mortgage Solutions.  

He is a former Director of the Robert Toigo Foundation, advancing diverse representation in financial services, and a former Trustee of the Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. He has also served on the governing board of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s economic development council through Team PA. 

A passionate mentor and coach, he has made it a personal mission to nurture emerging talent. So many, he has lost count. That same spirit animates his enthusiasm for the Wharton community and the conversations he looks forward to having here. 

A Harvard College graduate in biochemistry and Harvard Business School MBA, Darren brings a scientist’s perspective to his work. What has distinguished him throughout his career is the ability to translate complex theory into clear, actionable plans.
